I’m Starting a New Business

In January of 2023 I quit my job to pursue independent consulting with no real plan besides replacing my salary. No master plan. Just wanted to leave a job I hated and independent consulting provided me that opportunity.

Well, 9 months later I think I have my master plan.

Stepping back and reflecting on my career the past 10 years, I realize my true differentiator is in building niche professional service businesses. At least that’s my current working theory.

My niche is Privacy.

Looking at the privacy industry I think there are 3 complementary service businesses that I can and plan to start.

  1. Consulting - already doing this today with FLLR Consulting.

  2. Search & Staffing (recruiting) - this business I’m launching September 5 and it’s called Privacy Hires.

  3. Education & Training - this business I’m looking to launch in 2024. Right now just giving away free email courses.

My Master Plan

What is Privacy Hires? We are Privacy + Security Search and Staffing Specialists.

What does that mean? We helping companies hire full-time or contract folks who work in privacy and security (+ compliance).

Ok but why this business? A few reasons:

  1. Consulting is fine but ‘doing’ the work isn’t my passion. I’ve implemented the same software for near 7 years. There’s no challenge here.

  2. My clients are coming to me asking them for recommendations and help hiring talent for their teams. “We have an opening. Do you know anyone?” There’s an opportunity to get paid for this.

  3. Search and Staffing is a service business much like real estate. You get a % of 1st years salary. Heavily people dependent and it’s about bring two parties together. I have my real estate license and have done about 10 transactions in the last 3 years.

  4. There’s money to be made! Looks like 4-6 players in this space hiring across all sorts of privacy specific roles. The market is validated for a small shop and I’d like a piece of it.

How I’m Structuring This Business

I’m the first to admit that I’m not a recruiter. Never done it before. It’s a whole skillset and industry.

But I do know how to operate professional service businesses, build operations, unblock and enable talent to succeed.

The business works for me if:

  • I do not run the day-to-day operations

  • Cashflow positive within first 4 months

  • My personal brand is a multiplier

  • Hiring rebounds in 2024

I’m committing $22,800+ and 4 months to proving this idea out. That is in the form of a contract salary for a full-desk recruiter (outbound sales & recruiting).

This keeps me out of the day-to-day and brings in someone with years of experience in this to help me navigate the details on this industry.

We have a goal of landing 6 placement contracts by end of year:

  • 1 in September

  • 2 in October

  • 3 in November

The Risk In This Business

  1. Are companies hiring? Feels like the market is rebounding.

  2. Are they working with search firms? They are but I need to break in.

  3. Can I do outbound sales? Today my consulting business is all referrals.
